Soviet Bus Stops by Christopher Herwig

Soviet Bus Stops by Christopher Herwig

Photographer Christopher Herwig first noticed the unusual architecture of Soviet-era bus stops during a 2002 long-distance bike ride from London to St. Petersburg. Challenging himself to take one good photograph every hour, Herwig began to notice surprisingly designed bus stops on otherwise deserted stretches of road.

He covered more than 30,000km by car, bus, bicycle and taxi in 13 former Soviet countries discovering and documenting bus stops that have spirit of modern art. From the shores of the Black Sea to the endless Kazakh steppe, these extraordinary bus stops show the range of public art from the Soviet era and give a rare glimpse into the creative minds of the time.
